Definition: : the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something : the act or process of motivating someone : the condition of being eager to act or work : the condition of being motivated : a force or influence that causes someone to do something what wikipedia defines???Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain behavior. It represents the reasons for people's actions, desires, and needs. Motivation can also be defined as one's direction to behavior or what causes a person to want to repeat a behavior and vice versa. A motive is what prompts the person to act in a certain way or at least develop an inclination for specific behavior. For example, when someone eats food to satisfy the need of hunger, or when a student does his/her work in school because they want a good grade. Both show a similar connection between what we do and why we do it. According to Maehr and Meyer, "Motivation is a word that is part of the popular culture as few other psychological concepts are". Wikipedia readers will have a motive (or motives) for reading an article, even if such motives are complex and difficult to pinpoint. At the other end of the range of complexity, hunger is frequently the motive for seeking out and consuming food. Generally, motivation is conceptualized as either intrinsic or extrinsic. Classically, these categories are regarded as distinct. Today, these concepts are less likely to be used as distinct categories, but instead as two ideal types that define a continuum:

“Nobody can give you freedom…nobody can give you equality or justice...if you are a man u take it” -MALCOM X “The duty of a true patriot is to protect the country from its government” -Thomas Paine Even before I knew what the word independence meant, August 15 was a celebration-a very special day. One of those rare days when I wouldn’t be asking amma whether I could take a leave from school. Independence Day was indeed a celebration for children like us. For there won’t be any classes, the chocolates and laddus ,and the Indian flag along with the badge of Indian map with golden borders(which had Jammu as one of the state) that we were going to get from school. Independence at that age meant eating laddus, fluttering the Indian flag, listening to some boring speeches and the flag hoisting. It was the celebrations like these that inculcated the so called nationalist feeling deep inside the mind of children like me. It was long back in the sense it was much before I knew that India’s independence was a big lie, much before I realized that I was celebrating a lie and that I was being part of the befooling business that was happening for the past 67 years, then I was just one among those befooled billions. Away from home at Shillong where am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in journalism; Independence Day had quite a different meaning. A week before the prescribed day seniors at hostel started the talks which gave a speculation about a bandh. It was very interesting and a bit terrifying to know that the Independence Day was boycotted here for the past few years by different militant groups. It was still a joke when university shut down for a week as a part of the bandh. All the way back to hostel I was thinking why a central university like EFLU shall shut down for a bandh like this? Shouldn’t we be the one to get into the road? “Get Maggi, download movies and don’t step out of hostel” was the advice that friends gave. The seriousness of the situation was revealed to me only when I saw three military buses filled with army men from Assam rifles camped at the city.as an outsider a bit of research into the situation disclosed the fact that this here day bandh was customary. How could something like a bandh be a custom? And how come people keep on watching and suffering such a custom? remained as big question marks. But the question raised by HNLC, the militant group was even more significant than my childish doubts. They had a point in their argument “what kind of independence shall people celebrate when their livelihood is at stake?” Who was it that got freedom? Was it the people or was it the rulers? What was actually ‘the independence’ we got? Was it just a shift of rule from British to Indian? Independence was just a cock and bull story….nothing more than that…Nehru then told that “long years ago we made a tryst with destiny ,and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge ,not wholly or in full measure ,but very substantially . At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends; and when soul of nation long suppressed, find utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.” but that was just a speech…..in reality the ‘freedom’ we got was the freedom to suffer from the ruling caste of India instead of Britain. Jallianwala baghs got transformed into communal riots. We fought for tax on salt and now we buy salt from Tata The long route journey from Kerala to Assam gave a greater insight to the independent prosperous India- the India owned and operated by the capitalist forces. An India of lost childhoods, colorful dreams, and an India belonging to a majority who were afraid to dare any injustice. Child labor was something that was banned by law in the independent India……during the journey I witnessed around 25 to 30 children who were ready to perform any circus apart of how dangerous it might be in front of passengers that would pay them an amount . I could see the horror and innocence inside their eyes, was they symbolizing the independent India?? Were they independent?? 67 years after the so called event of freedom we are not even able to free our children from working, don’t they have the right to dream of a better tomorrow?? Or was it that they didn’t have the freedom to dare, to dream, to hope?? They say that we have the freedom of expression. And those who expressed their protest are now labeled as terrorist, Maoist, or anti nationalist. They are arrested under various rules like TADA, POTA, AFSPA, UAPA, and a lot more. How could India be free when someone like Irom is still in the jail bars??Who are they afraid of- the common man? What sort of a freedom is it??How could India be free when a group of tribes are fighting for a roof on their heads? How could India be free when thousands of its children are sleeping on the roadside with an empty stomach?? Those who took weapon in their hands just for survival are now the culprits and the politician who eat out of our tax and again makes us suffer are the rulers-the real nationalists!! Yup, India is free as It is the Coca-Cola Company that decides what we should drink? It is Tata or Birla or Wipro who decides what we should study and what not? It is reliance that decides the price of food that we eat and the price of clothes we wear…..it is them who makes our policies, it is them who has the news networks and thus it is them who even decides what is news and what not? It is them who decide whether we should starve? It is them who use up our own natural resources and take money from us…… It is the clan of rulers who decide what we should speak? It is them who decide to where we can travel?? Just check on the fundamental rights. They give us equality before law….and I remember the quote ‘all are equal but some are more equal’…….. They give us freedom of speech and expression …..Which still remains as paper laws……and they have rules like AFSPA for those who are trying to express their freedom of speech They give us the freedom to practice any religion and just kill the innocent couples who have inter religious marriages…… And all these fundamental rights are irrespective of caste and gender they says….and then how come a Muslim is always suspected for being a terrorist and the third genders are still not a part of our society….. We have the right to life and education and still millions of children are on the street denied even the right to hope….. We have the right for equality and still the Dalit’s are Dalit’s and will continue to remain the same….they just remain as the lines of the biggest constitution the world has seen. We are having DE mockery instead of democracy…democracy should be the rule of people on rulers….but here we are ruled by ‘them’…we pay tax and they eat out of it..They play out of it. When lakhs of us are sleeping in a one room house or even in the street Ambani has a 27 storied house maintained by 600 workers costing over 50 -60 billion us dollars. Whose money was it??? How could in India a developing nation with a large number of people under the poverty line have an individual with whom such a large amount of money is concentrated such that he don’t know how to spend it and make luxurious homes.. We will be fooled as always…the rich becomes richer and the poor remains the same..and we repeat after them that we are free….. The loss is always for the aam aadmi…the one who is trying hard to make both ends meet, who are working had for a day’s bread and butter, for it is our tax with which they perform. We are all literate idiots……one among the unguided masses of India…who never want to think beyond ourselves…we pay tax, we keep mum, we go to school, get educated, have family, earn a lot, act normal, follow the flow, enjoy life and say that we are freeeee…….what was freedom all about then??? It is the state who even decides what we should think ……what we should act. Whether we should live…and they are always watching us and we are afraid of them…but why should we be…it is us the common man who is the majority…if we are not going to stand up for our rights then who else will? It is us who elect them….and the least thing we could do is to ‘do something’ than merely exist.. I just remember a V for vendetta quote….people should not be afraid of government but government should be afraid of its people….all of us do strive for a change-a better change…but we have to be that change that we want to be….that we want to see… Our voice will not be producing large echoes out there but it is the smaller noises that lead to the bigger chaos. And all that we have to try is to swim against the flow, be a change, and attain freedom within ourselves.as Camus told once “the only way to deal with an unfree world is to be so absolutely free so that your very existence is an act of rebellion..” After all “when injustice becomes the law, Resistance is our duty...” -Anamika.S.Nair |
